Devastated Athens during the Peloponnesian War, killing 75,000-100,000. Thucydides survived and described symptoms in detail. Pericles died. Weakened Athens contributed to their defeat. The pathogen is still debated. A disputed 2006 DNA study suggested typhoid fever.
