About Smallpox
Eradicated in 1980, the only human disease ever eliminated. Killed an estimated 300-500 million people in the 20th century alone. Ancient Egyptians had it, found on mummy skin. Jenner developed the first vaccine in 1796 using cowpox. The intensified WHO eradication campaign began in 1967 and ended with the last natural case in 1977.
