Yellow Fever
About Yellow Fever
The 1793 Philadelphia epidemic killed around 5,000 people, roughly a tenth of the city. Walter Reed proved mosquitoes transmitted it in 1900. The 17D vaccine, developed in 1937, is one of the safest ever made. Carlos Finlay first proposed the mosquito theory in 1881 and was ridiculed. It still kills tens of thousands of people a year, mostly in Africa.
